Invited by the OSR, the Berner Symphonieorchester, conducted by Krzysztof Urbanski, and the Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi offer an immersive journey into the world of Johannes Brahms, a leading figure of German Romanticism, in this programme devoted entirely to the composer.
Composed at a time when Brahms was struggling to come to terms with the death of his friend and mentor Robert Schumann, the Piano Concerto No. 1 is surprising in many ways. One is striking for its gravity and emotional intensity, the other for the way the solo part constantly blends with the voices of the orchestra rather than dictating the work’s concertante rhythm. The Symphony No. 2, meanwhile, offers a glimpse of a brighter and more serene side to Brahms, in a more mature style reminiscent of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony.

Invités par l’OSR, le Berner Symphonieorchester avec son chef Krzysztof Urbanski et le pianiste suisse Francesco Piemontesi proposent une immersion au cœur de l’univers de Johannes Brahms, figure majeure du romantisme allemand, dans ce programme entièrement dédié au compositeur.
Composé alors que Brahms peine à surmonter le deuil à la suite du décès de son ami et mentor Robert Schumann, le Concerto pour piano n° 1 surprend à bien des égards. De l’un, par sa gravité et intensité émotionnelle, de l’autre par la place qu’occupe la partie soliste, se mêlant constamment aux voix de l’orchestre plutôt qu’en imposant le rythme concertant de l’œuvre. La Symphonie n° 2, quant à elle, nous laisse entrevoir un visage plus lumineux et apaisé de Brahms, dans une écriture plus mature, rappelant la Pastorale de Beethoven.
