Moustey: History of Leyre at the confluence of customs
Saturday 17 September - Rendezvous at 9am at the parking place de l'église - Adult public - Duration 3h - Free on reservation on 05 24 73 37 40
La Leyre is a quiet and wild river stretching for nearly 100 km, from the south of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park to the Arcachon Basin where it flourishes in a delta. At the confluence of La Grande and La Petite Leyre, let yourself be told about their past customs. Imagine the beginning of the 19th century: flood-prone areas, meadows, hardwood and pine forests, and an invisible network of tributaries amidst a barren landscape dedicated to grazing sheep. Over the centuries, the Leyre was used for the flotation of wood and its tributaries were home to ironworks, tile works and mills. At Moustey, at the beginning of the 19th century, there were at least ten factories requiring access to water, five of which were located on or near the Grande and Petite Leyre (mills, tiles, glassworks). This guided tour, enriched with objects and a sound testimony, will be an opportunity to look back on the artisanal and industrial past of the town of Moustey.
Visit commented by the members of the Regional Natural Park of Landes de Gascogne: Laurent Dégrave, technician river & Philippine Piel, in charge of Heritage Inventory mission.
Callen: Visit of the village of Callen followed by a time of exchange at the communal cultural space
Saturday 17 September - Rendezvous at 3pm in front of the square of the church Saint-Pierre de Callen - No reservation
The town of Callen, located on the banks of the Petite Leyre, was marked in the middle of the 19th century by the transfer of its communal centre. The former town, now completely extinct, is documented only by the Napoleonic cadastre and the municipal deliberations of the contemporary era. From 1860, a construction campaign was launched in the district of Trauquebert; new communal buildings (town hall, schools for girls and boys) were built along the crossing of the village, road from Luxey to the junction with that of Sore. The church of Saint-Pierre was erected during this period, as were the vast majority of the houses around it.
Overall, the municipality of Callen is composed of many neighborhoods whose habitat and agricultural dependencies are still very well preserved. The Landes houses, ranging from the 17th to the end of the 19th century, are mostly built in wood panel with awning and attic, some of them are masonry in alios stone or in medium limestone apparatus. The footprint of the forestry past is still present in the territory since several lodges of the last quarter 19th as well as the remains of a plant of distillation of resinous materials have been identified in Callen.

Le Sen: Guided tour of the Sen Mill
Sunday 18 September - Appointment at the mill at 10am - Duration 1h30 - No reservation
Closely linked to peasant life, the flour mill is an essential equipment for grinding grain and producing the flour needed to feed the villagers. The Sen Mill, formerly attached to the Sen Priory, still bears witness to an ancient way of life, techniques and know-how. Located close to the village and placed on a bypass, it is fed by the Estrigon, a tributary of the Midouze. The impoundment pond, located upstream, is used to feed the mill throughout the year. The valves regulate the flow of water necessary to turn the two horizontal grinding wheels of the mill. The Moulin du Sen, a small, square-plan building built from wood, is representative of the mills of the Haute Landes of the 18th and 19th centuries. Come and discover the history of this building, its architecture, its original and future functioning!
Visit of the mill with Mr. Zacchello, President of the Association de sauvegarde des moulins des Landes and Philippine Piel, responsible for Heritage Inventory in the PNR des Landes de Gascogne.
Garein: Guided tour of the temporary travelling exhibition - The architecture of airial landais. Back to the origins.
Sunday 18 September - Meeting at the barn from 3pm - Duration 1h - No reservation
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the PNR des Landes de Gascogne and the Ecomuseum, the exhibition “The architecture of airial landais. Back to the Origins » highlights a subject at the origin of the creation of the Écomusée de Marquèze: airial.
With new scientific advances, including the Park’s built heritage inventory mission since 2018, it aims to trace its architectural transformations over time.
The exhibition begins with the industrial period (1850-1950), little known in the study of airial: the opportunity to (re)put in perspective this architectural system that made the identity of the Landes de Gascogne as much as the pine forest. The journey continues with the detail of the domestic and agricultural architecture of the airial during the agropastoral era, then by a review of the scientific research on the question of the origins of this habitat, probably older than the eighteenth century. And because the airial and its inhabitants question as much as they inspire, the exhibition also takes stock of the vision that artists and authors had of this territory, between desert and idyllic oasis. Once a place of hard work, airial becomes a refuge in the midst of a welcoming and relaxing nature. For today as for tomorrow, the exhibition questions the perspectives to be given to this architecture which manages as well as hard to cross the centuries...

Parc naturel régional des Landes de Gascogne
Parc naturel, 33830 Belin-Béliet

  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Regional Natural Park of Landes de Gascogne is both a place of governance, a reservoir of biodiversity, a source of innovation and a geographical entity. This vast forested territory with preserved living environment, overlaps the departments of Landes and Gironde. It covers a large part of the pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne massif which gave it its name and extends from the Arcachon Basin, in the Buch Country, to the south of the Grande Lande. The Leyre, which crosses this forest, is a coastal river that flows into the Arcachon Basin after a 100km route. Its banks are bordered by deciduous trees, which make up an exceptional forest-gallery and thus houses a rich and varied natural heritage.
The Landes de Gascogne have been classified as a Regional Natural Park since 1970 and have therefore celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2020!
