The historical cradle of the city, the Rocher des Doms was converted into a promenade at the beginning of the 19th century. From 1863 the project of a garden is entrusted to the famous landscape gardener Jean Pierre Barillet-Deschamps, who intervenes in Paris in particular with the prefect Haussmann. He is the author, in others, of the gardens of Luxembourg, Parc Monceau, Parc des Buttes Chaumont and Parc Montsouris. In the garden of the Rocher des Doms, you will find all its own codes: groves, rock pools, perspective and creation of belvederes, a layout with impeccable and elegant curves, while combining the beauty of the scenes. The garden offers a wonderful panorama of the Rhone Valley and is part of an emblematic landscape, with the articulation between the Palais des Papes and the Saint-Bénézet bridge. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and has recently been protected as a historical monument. A meeting place of leisure for all the people of Avignon and obligatory passage of visitors, the garden subject to strong frequentations deteriorated and required restoration work. Its strong geological and cultural identity has imposed two attitudes: humility in the face of the wealth of heritage existing on this exceptional site and ambition to adapt to current uses, reconcile public accessibility, the safety but also the restoration of the plant palette, adapting the practices of botanical heritage management with biodiversity and climate issues. After consultation the City selected the team of Aleppo, landscape designers based in Cadenet to carry out a project that aims to restore the garden in respect of its historical and heritage integrity, getting as close as possible to its original state while adapting it to be functional and meet contemporary uses. The visit is assured with the landscape architects in charge of the restoration project. Appointment with the portal of access to the garden.Non accessible to the PMR. On reservation by phone at 04 32 74 32 74 and at the reception of the OT, 41 cours Jean Jaurès and at the Maison du Parc Allée Antoine Pinay.

About the location

Jardin du rocher des Doms
rue du Palais 84000 Avignon
  • Vaucluse
  • Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
The Rocher des Doms is the cradle of Avignon and has been regularly occupied since Prehistory. It is reached today by the stairs starting from the Notre Dame des Doms cathedral, by the Sainte-Anne staircase or the one on the banks of the Rhône.
In the middle of the lake, the Venus aux Hirondelles is a work by Félix Charpentier, whose nudity earned him to be moved, in 1894, from Place Carnot to here.
We can also discover what an "analemmatic" solar calendar is and the statues of some great men of Avignon, including Jean Althen.
