At the beginning of the century, the site of the "red pits" was still only a sand quarry. Then gradually, it was transformed into a municipal landfill. In 1987, the policy of the municipality allowed the redevelopment of the old quarry into an arboretum rich of 80 different varieties. In 1996, Mr Jean-Pierre Lanson, President of the Franco European Society of Fuchsiaphilia, donated his collection of fuchsias to the city of Mansle. The park acquired a new function as a "fuchsia acclimatization garden". The park was built to accommodate these plants. An artificial waterfall and river was created to recreate an atmosphere similar to the natural living conditions of fuchsia. Today, the fuchsia collection includes about 400 varieties, hybrids and botanicals. The Mansle Town Hall works in partnership with the Natural History Museum to increase its collection but also to perpetuate it.
