Originally, the Expiatory Chapel is simply lined with yews and cypresses. The primitive path led the visitor between two double hedges to the vestibule on the facade of which the plant motifs of poppy heads and cypress branches, inspired by Antiquity, recall the symbolism of eternal rest. Beyond, the interior garden or raised «campo santo» invites the visitor to meditate. Its current shape is the result of an evolution: the classic garden was succeeded in 1974 by the famous white roses.
