Discovery of the medieval orchard garden of the Abbey of Clausonne
Content of the visit
On the south side of the Abbey of Clausonne, discover the recent medieval orchard created by the members of the association. The remains of the Abbey of Clausonne were inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments in 1994. Currently of modest size, this orchard aims to make discover varieties consumed by the monks Chalaisiens, who occupied the place between the XIIth and the XIVth century. The visit of the orchard, commented by passionate members of the association, will be an opportunity to discover:
- the remains of the Abbey, a place steeped in history
- the types of varieties planted in the orchard
- the monks' way of life
Practicality
IMPORTANT: the appointment is at 15h directly on site (GPS 44.452231, 5.841844) The Abbey is, by essence, located in a remote site, accessible only on foot. Access by car will also be impossible due to the holding of a music festival that same day. Along the way you will discover the dizzying gorges, a natural sound amphitheatre and a river that meanders, creating natural basins. Your effort will be rewarded. Several possibilities are available to you to join the Abbey:
- park at the gorges car park (GPS 44.469428, 5.829654) or at the village, and walk along the track for 1h to 1h30, 250m of positive elevation.
- make a superb loop up the Clausonne trail. Count 2h30 from the village of Saix (500m of positive elevation).
Outside the tour
The Abbey site is accessible all year round, free of charge.
