In 1003 a fortified priory was founded attached to the new Abbey of Maillezais. The former powder magazine tower of the 15th century, later transformed into a dovecot, is the only vestige of this era. In the 16th century, Geoffroy d'Estissac, bishop of Maillezais, decided to build his summer residence in the Renaissance style. Rabelais, his secretary, stayed there and sent from his exile to Rome plane trees plants which descend the remarkable specimens that can be admired today, among the oldest in France. In the 17th century, after the destruction of Hermenault and Maillezais during the wars of religion, the episcopal see was transferred to La Rochelle. The successive bishops restored the Renaissance castle and completed it with the construction of the current castle: a long arcaded building, which was then partly renovated in the 18th century in the classical style. At the same time, the regular park is laid out: four grass terraces connect the castle platform to the channeled Longèves bordering a hemicycle perspective centered on a mirror of water. Stone bridge, wash house, mill, horse pool and vegetable garden are integrated into the facilities. A colossal barn (512m2) with frame in the Philibert Delorme style, completes the unique architectural wealth of the site. During the revolution, the Renaissance castle is again destroyed and then dismantled: only the high tower of Estissac remains.
