This former castle of the XIIth century with drawbridge and ditches became in the XIXth century a large house of quadrangular master, with roof in slate with 4 panels, in «Lorraine». Around 1905 it was enlarged by the wings and transformed into an elegant residence. During the First World War, it was occupied by the Germans who made it their staff. Emperor William II then stayed there. It then became the residence of the various directors and engineers of the Droitaumont mine.
Located away from the urbanized areas, the castle of Moncel and its park are the property of the Town of Jarny since 1980\. This area has both a remarkable architectural and natural heritage. The park is classified “Jardin de France” and refuge of the League for the Protection of Birds. The castle has an undeniable heritage character both externally and internally.
Today, it houses the Maison de l'Environnement where several environmental associations are housed.
