Phung-Tien Phan et Niklas Taleb, "Modernist"
"Modernistin" is the title of the first exhibition in France of the artists Phung-Tien Phan (born 1983 in Essen) and Niklas Taleb (born 1986 in Munich).

Living together and currently working in Essen, Germany, this exhibition is an opportunity to engage in a dialogue between their two practices for the first time. In their work, they are interested in the design of domestic space, the staging of affects and dress codes, different manifestations of social representation that allow them to question the artificial nature of European heterosexual and bourgeois relationships.
As a counterweight to the imposing architecture of the museum building, the two artists have imagined an installation of paper walls that divides the space and reproduces the dimensions of the different rooms that make up an apartment. This installation is also the setting for a set of sculptures by Phung-Tien Phan and photographs by Niklas Taleb. Together, they propose a stroll between the interior and intimate space of the apartment and the exterior space of the street.
The heterogeneous association of photographs of car hoods, sculptures with the appearance of an Ikea kitchenette and dimmed lights participate in the construction of a universe that is both familiar in its codes but strange in its suspension: an extraordinary standardization.

Vivant ensemble et travaillant actuellement à Essen en Allemagne, cette exposition est l'occasion d'opérer un dialogue entre leurs deux pratiques pour la première fois. Dans leur travail, ils s'intéressent à l'aménagement de l'espace domestique, à la mise en scène des affects et aux codes vestimentaires, différentes manifestations de la représentation sociale qui leur permettent de questionner la nature artificielle des relations hétérosexuelles et bourgeoises européennes.
En contrepoids de l'architecture imposante du bâtiment du musée, les deux artistes ont imaginé une installation de murs de papiers qui divise l'espace et reproduit les dimensions des différentes pièces composant un appartement. Cette installation est aussi l'écrin d'un ensemble de sculptures de Phung-Tien Phan et des photographies de Niklas Taleb. Ensemble, ils proposent une balade entre l'espace intérieur et intime de l'appartement et l'espace extérieur de la rue.
L'association hétéroclite de photographies de capots de voiture, de sculptures aux allures de kitchenette Ikea et de lumières tamisées participe de la construction d'un univers à la fois familier dans ses codes mais étrange dans sa suspension : une standardisation extraordinaire.
