The exhibition MAMCO, From Memory is based on a participatory exercise, as a thousand members of the public voted for their favorite items from the collection, and the chosen works—around 500 in total—will go on display throughout the museum this fall. This exhibition can thus be viewed as a collective portrait of the museum based on public sentiment: voters were asked to choose one piece—associated perhaps with a memory, a sense of attachment, or a discovery—that, in their view, captures one aspect of MAMCO’s identity.
Our team of curators, led by Julien Fronsacq, has arranged the requested works throughout the museum, which is devoted entirely to this special exhibition.
MAMCO, From Memory also marks a new chapter in the museum’s history: it takes place in our 30th anniversary year and will be the last exhibition held at the museum’s historic premises before the building closes for renovation. During the closure, which will last for several years, the museum will run a modified program of off-site events. It will then return to its home, a former machine tool and measuring instrument factory, after it has been restructured as a public venue, renovated to international museum standards and fitted with equipment that has long been sorely lacking. So the exhibition can also be viewed as a tribute to those who dreamed up, set up, and built up the museum and its collection over the past three decades, bearing in mind that MAMCO owes its very existence to grassroots efforts to establish a home for contemporary art in Geneva.
And since next year marks our 30th anniversary, MAMCO will be offering free admission to the exhibition and running a series of public activities and events.

L’exposition « Le MAMCO, de mémoire » est fondée sur un principe participatif. C’est en effet le public qui a choisi les éléments rendus visibles de ce projet, en sélectionnant, par un millier de votes les quelques 500 œuvres de la collection présentées dans l’ensemble des espaces du musée cet automne. L’exposition est ainsi un retour public sur nos collections et un portrait collectif de l’institution genevoise : chacun.e aura choisi, parmi ses souvenirs, ses engagements ou ses découvertes l’une des œuvres qui définissent aujourd’hui une partie de l’identité du MAMCO.
La conservation du musée, sous la direction de Julien Fronsacq, a organisé la répartition des œuvres dans les espaces du musée, entièrement consacrés à ce projet.
Ce projet marque également la fin d’une période de 30 ans pour le musée : « Le MAMCO, de mémoire » devrait en effet être la dernière exposition dans le bâtiment avant sa rénovation. Après plusieurs années hors site, qui verront se mettre en place une autre forme de programmation, le MAMCO réintègrera le bâtiment de l’ex-complexe industriel de la SIP, mis aux normes muséales, restructuré pour l’accueil des publics et munis d’équipements qui lui ont toujours fait défaut. L’exposition s’entend donc aussi comme un hommage à celles et ceux qui ont voulu, créé et accompagné le développement du musée et de sa collection ces trois dernières décennies – soit l’addition d’efforts citoyens pour qu’existe à Genève un lieu patrimonial dédié à l’art de notre temps.
Pour célébrer les 30 ans du MAMCO, l’entrée sera gratuite pendant toute la durée de cette manifestation, qui sera également rythmée par un programme d’interventions publiques.
