A photograph is never neutral or objective. Rather, it tells the story of a particular, situated way of looking at the world. Using MEG's past and present photographic archives as a starting point, this workshop invites you to question the ways in which we see and "make see" the people and objects represented in these images.
This workshop combines presentation, discussion and practice, and is led by MEG photographer Johnathan Watts.
The first part of the workshop is dedicated to the ethnographic and colonial gaze present in MEG's archives and museum practice in the broadest sense, and to works that question or denounce this "colonial gaze". Secondly, you will have the opportunity to propose interventions or reinterpretations on archive images during a workshop. Finally, you'll go behind the scenes of MEG's photographic studio to reinterpret the current practice of museum photography.

Une photographie n’est jamais neutre ou objective. Elle raconte plutôt une perspective particulière et située de regarder le monde. En partant des archives photographiques passées et actuelles du MEG, cet atelier vous propose d’interroger les manières de voir et de "faire voir" les personnes et les objets représentés sur ces images.
Cet atelier alliant présentation, discussions et pratique est mené par Johnathan Watts, photographe au MEG.
La première partie de l’atelier est dédiée au regard ethnographique et colonial présent dans les archives du MEG et la pratique muséale au sens large ainsi qu’aux travaux qui remettent en question ou dénoncent ce « regard colonial ». Dans un deuxième temps, vous avez l’occasion de proposer des interventions ou des réinterprétations sur des images d’archives lors d'un atelier. Finalement, vous entrez dans les coulisses du studio photographique du MEG pour réinterroger la pratique actuelle de photographie muséale.
