Symphony 13 "Babi Yar" is one of Shostakovich’s most powerful works. Created in 1962, this symphony is a denunciation of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis in 1941 near the ravine «Babi Yar» in Ukraine. This episode of the Shoah inspired one of Shostakovich’s most human and moving music. In the first part, Joshua Weilerstein conducts A Survivor of Warsaw, a dazzling oratorio based on the testimony of a survivor of the Warsaw ghetto, written by Schoenberg just after the war in 1947.
