How is the rapid development of artificial intelligence transforming our ability to think and to live in society?

A lecture organised as part of the educational programme, open to the public. Anne Alombert is a qualified philosophy teacher and a senior lecturer in contemporary philosophy at the University of Paris 8. How is the rapid development of artificial intelligence transforming our ability to think and to form society?
To answer this question, we shall look back at the history of alphabetic writing and industrial automation, in order to understand the implications of computer-based writing and digital automation. In the context of ‘generative artificial intelligence’ – which some transhumanists now describe as ‘digital minds’ – we must, conversely, ask how digital technologies affect our minds, which remain both individual and collective.
How are automatic text generators transforming our capacities for thought and expression? What are the effects of ‘virtual companions’ on our emotional lives and social relationships? What are the hidden risks behind the computation of language and the automation of otherness?
We will reflect on the philosophical implications of these questions, whilst exploring ways to ‘embrace’ the ongoing industrial acceleration, in the realms of politics, education, the economy and innovation.

Anne Alombert est agrégée de philosophie, maîtresse de conférences en philosophie contemporaine à l’université Paris 8.Comment le développement fulgurant de l’intelligence artificielle transforme-t-il nos capacités de penser et de faire société ?
Pour répondre à cette question, nous reviendrons sur l’histoire de l’écriture alphabétique et de l’automatisation industrielle, afin de saisir les enjeux de l’écriture informatique et de l’automatisation numérique. Dans le contexte des « intelligences artificielles génératives », que certains transhumanistes décrivent aujourd’hui comme des « esprits numériques », il convient, à l’inverse, de se demander comment les technologies numériques affectent nos esprits toujours individuels et collectifs.
En quoi les générateurs automatiques de textes transforment-ils nos capacités de réflexion et d’expression ? Quels sont les effets des « compagnons virtuels » sur nos vies affectives et sur nos relations sociales ? Quels sont les risques cachés derrière la computation du langage et l’automatisation de l’altérité ?
Nous réfléchirons aux enjeux philosophiques de ces questions, tout en envisageant des leviers pour « adopter » l’accélération industrielle en cours, à la fois sur les plans de la politique, de l’éducation, de l’économie et de l’innovation.

Lezing georganiseerd in het kader van het onderwijsprogramma, toegankelijk voor het publiek. Anne Alombert is hoogleraar filosofie en universitair docent hedendaagse filosofie aan de Universiteit van Parijs 8. Hoe verandert de razendsnelle ontwikkeling van kunstmatige intelligentie ons vermogen om te denken en een samenleving te vormen?
Om deze vraag te beantwoorden, blikken we terug op de geschiedenis van het alfabetische schrift en de industriële automatisering, om zo de uitdagingen van het computerschrift en de digitale automatisering te begrijpen. In de context van ‘generatieve kunstmatige intelligentie’, die sommige transhumanisten tegenwoordig omschrijven als ‘digitale geesten’, is het daarentegen aangewezen om ons af te vragen hoe digitale technologieën onze nog steeds individuele en collectieve geesten beïnvloeden.
In hoeverre veranderen automatische tekstgeneratoren ons denk- en uitdrukkingsvermogen? Welke effecten hebben ‘virtuele metgezellen’ op ons gevoelsleven en onze sociale relaties? Welke risico’s schuilen er achter taalverwerking en de automatisering van het anders-zijn?
We zullen nadenken over de filosofische implicaties van deze vragen en tegelijkertijd mogelijkheden onderzoeken om de huidige industriële versnelling te ‘omarmen’, zowel op het vlak van beleid, onderwijs, economie als innovatie.
