The small expo #6. From September 13, 2025 to February 8, 2026.
The reconstruction of Caen (1946-1963) included in its programme the safeguarding of heritage spared by the bombs, but also opened a cycle of artistic commissions that continued into the 1970s and offered the city the treasures of a new heritage.
In this context, stained glass is the often-overlooked example of the last impulses of a religious art, between figuration and modernity. The work of Danièle Perré (born in 1924) is a commission from the administration of historical monuments for the restoration of the church Saint-Jean (Jean Merlet, chief architect) with the strong support of the mayor of Caen, Jean-Marie Louvel (1959-1970).
The artist designed 26 cartons after drawing more than 300 models. The stained glass windows were made by the workshop of Pierre Gaudin (Paris, 1908-1973). The workshop collection acquired by the Museum of Normandy gives a glimpse into the creative process and invites to look up, everywhere in the city, at the revelations of this art of color.

The castle of Caen was founded around 1060 by William the Conqueror. The stone donjon and the Exchequer room were erected around 1120 by Henry I Beauclerc, son of William the Conqueror. Under Philip Augustus, the keep was surrounded by a jacket flanked by four circular towers and lined with ditches. In the 14th century, a residence (now the governor’s residence) was built, and remodelled in the 16th and 18th centuries. The church of Saint-Georges, from the 12th century, was remodelled in the 16th century (the nave paneled has kept its frame and its Romanesque windows). From the 17th century, the castle lost its defensive use and became a garrison place. After the Revolution, the dungeon was leveled, the ditches filled and the site assigned to the army.
