About the location

Site de Castelpanis
La Ramondié, 81340 Assac

In the Tarn, a model of habitat prevails since the High Middle Ages, it is that of the castelas. The traces he left are counted by dozens. In Ambialet, Fond Renard and Castelpanis, the men gathered in real small villages around «castles». This castle is not majestic. It is very small and built with an economy of means that may surprise. It is often reduced to a square tower protected by a trench. The choice of location is never neutral. The castelas are almost always on a high point.
The peculiarity of the castelas lies in the use of the rocky base to implant buildings. It is literally one with the rock. There are many forms of drivage. Boulin holes, sills, closures, door lintels, post holes, rainwater trenches, all of which have been preserved in the shale for a thousand years, allowing the site to be rebuilt.
