The old cathedral of Senez opens its doors to admire a recognized religious furniture, in a typical monument of the first Provencal Romanesque art.
Built on the ruins of the Roman city of Sanitium and marked by the wars of religion, the former cathedral of Senez is endowed with a rich furniture, testimony to its past greatness.
Laetitia, guide-lecturer invites you to go back in time in the heart of one of the oldest episcopal cities of Provence and to discover the hidden treasures of the cathedral and its incredible history through the centuries.
Currently closed to the public due to restoration work, the former cathedral is exceptionally open for this visit.
Duration of the visit: about 1h30. No reservation.

Historians agree that the construction of the cathedral of Senez dates back to the end of the 12th century. Its construction would have been undertaken only in May 1176, and its consecration would have taken place on October 22, 1246\. The first phase of construction would concern the apse. That of the nave, dates back to the first half of the 13th century; the sacristy would date from the end of the Middle Ages. The portal was cladded to the Romanesque wall in the 14th century. The building experiences its first setbacks in 1569, when the Huguenots of Antoine de Mauvans break the marble columns of the portal. The cloister and the buildings of the canons were also destroyed. Bishop Claude de Mouchy (1561-1587), abbot of the Thoronet, had a framework built above the vault. In 1684, other important works were carried out: restoration of the gables, reinforcement of the facade, the cracks in the walls are blocked, the facings and buttresses are redone.
