To the rediscovery of Flandrin’s frieze and Bouguereau’s canvases!
After the restoration by the City of Paris, come and admire the frieze of the Saintes by Hippolyte Flandrin, a rare example of wax painting, and a masterpiece of this painter from Lyon.
And awaiting the restoration of the frieze of Saints and Christ by François-Edouard Picot, in the chapel of the Virgin: the good surprise of the paintings of William Bouguereau in all their brilliance.

The construction of the building was launched in 1824 on the plans of the architect Jean-Baptiste Lepère, joined shortly after by his son-in-law Jacques-Ignace Hittorff who modified somewhat the project. The work is interrupted by the political events of 1830 and the church is finally delivered to worship in 1844\. The scenery not being completed, the orders succeed until 1854\. The church is distinguished by its two-storey elevation of colonnades and by the large frieze painted in wax by Hippolyte Flandrin. Hittorff draws his architectural references from Antiquity, hence his preference for the Ionic order and the use of sculpture in the round for the pediment. Important milestone in the religious architecture of the 19th century, this church was designed by Hittorff as a real museum of decorative techniques available at his time: wax painting, stained glass windows painted in enameled glasses, painted or gilded cast iron, etc.
