About the location

Chapelle Saint-Denis
21 Rue Saint-Blaise, 67440 Marmoutier
  • Bas-Rhin
  • Grand Est
This chapel, located within the parish cemetery, dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. However, the so-called "de l'abbé Celse" charter of 828, a document that lists all the possessions of the abbey of Marmoutier, tells us that there was an older building dedicated to Saint Denis at this location. Preserved during the Peasants' War of 1525 and the Thirty Years' War, this chapel has survived the centuries. In the Middle Ages, it was located in the suburbs of Marmoutier and associated with a parish church dedicated to Saint Etienne. The latter, considered too old, was destroyed in 1805\.
The chapel has a Romanesque nave from the 12th century and a choir mixing Romanesque and Gothic styles, whose sexpartite vault, built around 1225, is the oldest known in Alsace. Each of the six vaults is decorated with a bust of saint who played an important religious role in the life of the abbey: Léobard, Léon IX, Benoît d'Aniane, Pirmin, Maur and Etienne.
