Edifiés between 1882 and 1885, the forts of Uxegney and of Drink Him(Her,It) Abbot were important elements of the Place(Square) of Epinal. This one served as fulcrum(support) in the strengthened system the set up by the general Séré of Rivers, from Belfort to Epinal and from Toul to Verdun, after the war of 1870 and the annexation of Alsace and of Moselle by Germany. These two works patiently revamped since 1989 by the volunteers of the association ARFUPE, are returned accessible(approachable) to the visitors and registered on the additional inventory of historic monuments all over their exceptional state of preservation today. The fort of Uxegney, built in masonry, then reinforced concrete(watertight), lives(remains) one of the very rare examples of hardly updating before 1914, stayed undamaged. In the labyrinth of the underground galleries, it is possible to discover a large number of restored elements (turrets of artillery, pieces of ordnance in situation, barracks, cooking(kitchen), electrical factory, etc), as well as the unique(only) copy in working order of a turret with model eclipse Rascal for a standard(cannon) of 155mm, colossal 250 ton mechanics was installed(settled) in 1912\. A route(course) on the tops of work révèlera you the armoured domes of turrets and of monitoring centres(observatories), as well as a large landscape. Having located in a little more than a kilometre in the East, and connected(bound) with his neighbour by a section of the old(former) military railway rebuilt by the association, the wooden fort the Abbot was never reinforced, nor updated as that of Uxegney and keeps(preserves) its aspect of origin in masonry.
