About the location

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg
Place de la Cathédrale, 67000 Strasbourg
  • Bas-Rhin
  • Grand Est
Located on the Grande-Île sector, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Notre-Dame de Strasbourg Cathedral is one of the only large Gothic cathedrals in France that still stands in a preserved medieval urban fabric.
The Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, which was built between 1150 and 1439, was the highest building in Christianity until the 19th century. It is recognizable by its unique steeple surmounted by an arrow. Its stone lace, its statuary, its stained glass windows are all elements that led Victor Hugo to describe it as «prodigy of the gigantic and delicate».
The Saint-Laurent portal, remarkable for its rich late Gothic decoration, is today the object of all attention. A global conservation restoration operation is planned between 2021 and 2024 to preserve this architectural ensemble and thus restore its legibility and majesty.
