Arles offers an interesting example of the adaptation of an ancient city to the civilization of medieval Europe. It preserves impressive Roman monuments as well as exceptional antique collections. Inside the walls, Saint-Trophime with its cloister is one of the major monuments of Provençal Romanesque art. Completed around 12 BC, the ancient theatre precedes by a century its illustrious neighbour the amphitheatre. The theatre is built in the heart of the ancient city. Its plundering for centuries to feed yards with materials ends up even forgetting the ancient function that was rediscovered only at the end of the seventeenth century. It has now regained its original function.
