The rupture of the Malpasset dam, located on the Reyran about ten kilometers upstream from the city, caused a disaster that deeply marked the history of Fréjus and that still persists today in the memory of the French. Creating a reservoir for irrigation of crops and drinking water supply in the region, the structure, a concrete arch dam completed in 1954, is built on a fragile bedrock. After several days of exceptional rainfall, the dam gives way on December 2 at 21:13\. A wave of 60 meters high, causing 150,000 m3 of water, will surge into the Reyran valley, then into the plain to reach the sea in forty minutes. If the center of Fréjus, built on a small eminence, is spared, the waters ravage several neighborhoods of the city, devastates many buildings, destroyed infrastructure and agricultural land.
