Built in its entirety in XV° on the site of a small fief mentioned in 1350, the castle of Courtanvaux is acquired in the second half of the century by J. de Berziau, financier close to the Crown, which undertakes new constructions from 1498\. The buildings were extensively restored at the beginning of XIX°, and the interiors were refurbished in Gothic Revival. Breaking with the medieval aspect of the complex (enclosure with ditch and fortified castle; main houses of Gothic character, with turrets of stairs and dormers to gâbles), one notices, in front of the ditch, the monumental porch flanked by two round towers whose decoration of niches, Fluted pilasters and pediments is an anthology of Renaissance forms.
