In January 1805, the plan approved by the Emperor provided for a «comedy» in the centre of the city… but at the expense of the municipality. Due to lack of resources, the Italian-style theatre was inaugurated in 1845, on the site of barracks of the first empire. It replaces a temporary performance hall, which has been housed in the halls since 1811. Like other Neoclassical buildings in Yonne, the theatre has a peristyle with columns and pilasters supporting an entablature and a triangular pediment. Inside, its Italian-style room, built of wood, is richly decorated. In 1888, the balconies were decorated with comedy masks, garlands of flowers and musical instruments. The coffered ceiling alternates representations of the Muses and bouquets of flowers.
