Discover the temple of the city on a guided tour
The visit of the temple offers to discover the building and to cross five centuries of history of Protestantism in Sommières.
At the end of the 16th century, Calvinist preachers were held in Sommières and the population quickly adhered to the new visions of the Christian faith. The first temple, built place Saussines, was razed in 1685 under the order of Louis XIV. The Wars of Religion and the Civil Wars, which opposed royal authority, Catholic, and Protestants, deeply marked the city and its inhabitants for three centuries. The town, the castle and the parish church are the object of siege and capture by both parties.
It was not until 1807 that Protestants were given a place of worship. The current temple is the old church of the convent of the cordeliers reworked in the nineteenth century: the facade and the nave have undergone transformations. The furniture is remarkable, in particular the cylinder organ, classified as a historical monument for its instrumental part.
