Perched 245 meters on a rocky promontory that rose during the high school (Late Cretaceous, -85 million years), the site of Gicon dominates the two low valleys of the Cèze and the Rhone. The cave on the western flank shows an early occupation, dating back to prehistoric times, then Celtic. Similarly, the large retaining wall to the north is due to the steep slope of the summit. Roman traces are also present, confirmed by the entrance calade, a funerary stele and numerous fragments of dolia and tegolae. The site is linked to the bishops of Uzès since 896, in the Carolingian era, and since 945 to the Clunisians of Saint-Saturnin-du-Port in Pont-Saint-Esprit. The keep allows to date the southern constructions of the castle between 1220 and 1260, during the reign of Saint Louis, who would have passed there twice, in 1248 and 1270, during his departures for the seventh and eighth crusades. In 1312, Philippe le Bel authorized Guillaume de Saint Just to build a fortified house (building to the north) to strengthen the defense system of the Gard bank of the Rhone, which since 923 has been the border between the Kingdom and the Empire. Among the secular lords, there are Montières, d'Ancezune de Vénéjan and eleven lords of Fage, who from the sixteenth century reside in the village. The revolt of Henri de Montmorency, lord of Bagnols and governor of Languedoc, and of François de Fages against Louis XIII and Richelieu is at the origin, in 1631, of the destruction of the keep. At the time of the Revolution, Cesare Ferrero d'Ormea, son-in-law of the last lord of Laudun, being of Piedmontese origin, could preserve his property. Three families succeeded him, including the Michel-Cotte family, also owner of the Domaine de Saint-Georges, from 1875 to 1973. In 1973, the winery of the winegrowers of Chusclan acquires the site.
