The fortified Romanesque church of Saint-Laurent de Carcarès dates from the 12th century. Its bell tower-wall carries a holly and, are still visible, traces of loopholes and archers. Inside are the 17th century bust of Saint-Girons in gilded wood and the statue of the Virgin Assisi, in gilded and polychrome wood, from the 14th century and striking by its majesty. There are also many paintings including those of Saint-Laurent, Saint-Jérôme, Saint-Pierre, as well as a baroque altarpiece, very gilded, with torso columns.

When he approaches Carcarès-Sainte-Croix from Tartas, the visitor can only be surprised by the proud position of the church. Camped at the extreme edge of the promontory where the plateau that carries the village stops overhanging the whole country to the southwest, she seems the sentry at her lookout post. It is not forbidden to think that actually this site was chosen to have an eye on possible undesirable that could slip into the stronghold of Tartas by the thread of the Midouze.
