Free visit of a Romanesque church
Accompanied by volunteers from the Friends of Saint-Pierre de Josse Church, discover the church and its Romanesque and Gothic architectural decorations.
The church of Montfort-en-Chalosse bears traces of construction of several eras and styles. The date of its foundation could date back to the 12th century. It is included in its entirety in the additional inventory of historical monuments. The original building was Romanesque. The nave and bell tower, both with very thick walls of nearly 2 m, date from this period. The church was enlarged in the Gothic period. Many changes were also made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The very simple organs date back to the 17th century. Behind the high altar, you will discover historical capitals that deserve attention. The church is part of the discovery circuit of the bastide of Montfort (point 5). A path of 600 m in the woods will lead you to the fountain of the hundred steps.
