The dress of the queen

Reconstruction of a Renaissance dress by a costume designer, Laura Noël. On a full-length portrait kept at the castle, Henri IV’s mother, Jeanne d'Albret, wears a beautiful and sober mourning dress. What are the meanings of this outfit of the Protestant queen? What was the female fashion in the middle of the sixteenth century? And how can we reproduce such a garment today, piece by piece?
