Erected in the fourteenth century on the ruins of an older castle, the monument underwent several alterations and multiple adjustments until the nineteenth century. The castle has retained its medieval fortress appearance which is reflected in the water of the wide moat that surrounds it.
Charles Louis de Secondat, better known as Montesquieu, was very attached to the family castle of La Brède. The interior tour takes the visitor on the steps of the writer through the emblematic places where he worked, including his library and his room preserved in its state of the eighteenth century. The visit of the chapel and the salons reveals the wealth of collections and furniture brought together by the family over time.
A place of relaxation and work, he returned here throughout his life and composed much of his work, including "Les Lettres persanes" (1721), Considération sur la cause de la grandeur des romains et de leur décadence (1734) and "De l'esprit des lois" (1748). The estate remained the property of the Montesquieu family for nearly 900 years until the death of the Countess de Chabannes in 2004.
