Guided tour of the chapel of Marmande
Backed by the sub-prefecture of Lot-et-Garonne in the city center of Marmande, the Saint-Benoît Chapel is a building classified as Historical Monuments, which elegantly mixes baroque and classical styles. The only vestige of the former convent of Saint-Benoît, founded in 1645 by the Marquise de Grignols, it became a revolutionary prison when the nuns were expelled in 1792. The chapel was not returned to worship until 1839. Observe its classical style facade dominated by simple and sober lines, then enter and discover the baroque style interior with lush decoration. Admire the ceiling with its painted wood decoration with exuberant motifs, a vast polychrome gilded wooden altarpiece and an exceptional series of paintings from the Toulouse school of the eighteenth century, illustrating the life of Jesus (adoration of the magi, baptism, etc.).
