On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Cité du Vin invites you to explore the exceptional terraced vineyards of Lavaux, Switzerland.
This conference will take place in the Thomas Jefferson Auditorium and will also be broadcast online, allowing you to participate wherever you are.
In addition to this conference, a tasting of 4 Lavaux wines is then offered at 17:30. Feel free to register as well (these are 2 separate events, a reservation is required for each of them).
On the northern slope of Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, the terraced vineyard of Lavaux is the result of the combined work of nature and man. With its 900 hectares, this small vineyard in one piece, nestled between the agglomerations of Lausanne and Montreux-Vevey, was considered so exceptional that it was listed in 2007 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
A living and evolving cultural landscape, it has been shaped by the hand of man since the 11th century. The construction of some 450 kilometres of traditional masonry walls has enabled the slope to be laid out in more than 10,000 terraces overlooking Lake Geneva and facing the Alps. A titanic and heroic work, know-how and innovative techniques, a source of artistic and cultural inspiration that the winemakers of Lavaux maintain, perpetuate and still transmit to this day.
