The school city Chaptal was built between 1866 and 1876 by the architect Eugène Train to accommodate the students of the former boarding house Saint-Victor, founded in 1820 by the playwright and educator Prosper-Parfait Goubaux. Since classical humanities were not taught there, the school received the title of Chaptal College in 1848 rather than that of high school. There, education focused on applied science to respond to the growth of industry, agriculture and commerce during the Industrial Revolution. The facade of the place, with its bas-reliefs and its polychrome alternation of bricks and stones, characterized at the time of "system of decoration by materials", recalls the scientific vocation of the establishment.
