As every year, the Luxembourg Palace, the seat of the Senate, opens its doors to you as part of the European Heritage Days. You will enter in particular the hemicycle where 348 senators sit who ensure the representation of all the territories of the Republic. You will also discover this important place of our history that began with Marie de Medici in 1615. For these two days, the Palais, the Hôtel de la Présidence, the Jardin du Luxembourg and the greenhouses will be exceptionally open to the public.

Seat of the Senate, one of the two parliamentary assemblies with the National Assembly, the palace of Luxembourg was built from 1615 by Salomon de Brosse to be the palace of Marie de Medici, Henri IV’s widow, who wanted to find the architecture of the Pitti Palace in Florence where she had spent her childhood. This palace was in turn a royal residence, a revolutionary prison, then the seat of executive power briefly after the Revolution. The present hemicycle (or hall of sittings) was built between 1836 and 1841 according to the plans of Alphonse de Gisors. The palace has been home to the Senate of the Republic since 1879.
The Luxembourg Palace takes its name from the Duke of Piney, François de Luxembourg, who had acquired a hotel built in the middle of the 16th century. The hotel was enlarged and redecorated by Germain Boffrand between 1709 and 1716\. This hotel, now known as the Hotel du Petit Luxembourg, is the seat of the Presidency of the Senate.
