Visit of the hotel of Rochechouart - Ministry of Education and Youth
Built between 1776 and 1778, in the heart of the Faubourg Saint-Germain, the Hôtel de Rochechouart has been the seat of the Ministry of Education since 1829, less than a year after its creation. For nearly two centuries, these places have been the scene of discussions and decisions that have made it possible to build, stone by stone, the school of the Republic and to give the French educational system its current form. An aristocratic residence before becoming the seat of the Ministry of Education, the Rochechouart hotel has, since the 19th century, undergone successive expansions and improvements that gave it its current dimensions before a final restoration, In 2002, the façades and salons were restored to their original appearance. We discover, among others: - the great salon of the pure style Louis XVI, office of the minister and former office of Jules Ferry from 1879 to 1883 , where was born the republican school, secular, free and mandatory (the room has preserved its original decoration ) - the office of Guy de Maupassant, in charge of the minister’s correspondence from 1878 to 1881, where he wrote his first short story "Boule de Suif"; - the portrait gallery presenting all the ministers from 1828 to the present day.
