Permanently installed at the end of the 19th century on the first floor of the Fragonard building erected in 1876 by the architect DIET, the Library occupies a surface area of 800 m2 and cohabits with the Fragonard Museum. This is one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the École d'Alfort, and its great hall is still as it was when it was inaugurated in the early 1900s.

It is open to all those interested in animals and veterinary medicine, whether students, researchers or enthusiasts. It contains a large number of university-level documents, as well as a small collection of popularised material, and is aimed primarily at veterinary students, students of medicine and paramedical specialities, researchers in science and the history of science, and artists, whether animal lovers or not.

The National Veterinary School of Alfort is a public and administrative higher education and research institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. It maintains strong links with the Université Paris-Est, Anses, INRA and INSERM. The school was established in 1766 in the small hamlet of Alfort, two leagues from Paris. During its two and a half centuries of existence, it developed over the 11 hectares that formed its original site and is now in the heart of the town of Maisons-Alfort (Val-de-Marne). New themes led him to set up, at a distance from his main site, in consultation with the host regions, two thematic centres devoted to large herbivores.
