Assia Djebar (1936-2015) , French-Algerian author and director and elected to the French Academy, leaves an abundant work in touch with the history of Algeria and France. Her first novel La Soif (Julliard, 1957) reveals her as the Françoise Sagan of Algeria. Her film, La nouba des femmes du Mont-Chenoua (1977), which won the International Critics' Award at the Venice Biennale in 1979, recounts the return of a woman to her native mountains.
