Discover the Royal Palace of the Dukes of Orléans. Owned by the Dukes of Orléans in 1692 when King Louis XIV gave it to his brother Philippe d'Orléans, the Palais-Royal underwent many transformations and embellishments from the late seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century.

Built for the Cardinal de Richelieu by the architect Lemercier, builder of the Sorbonne, the main body (1634), facing the Louvre, becomes royal residence (Regency of Anne of Austria) then of the family of Orléans from 1661\. The work was completed and reworked in the 18th and 19th centuries. The three wings that close the sides of the garden date from the late 18th century. The superb and monumental setting of today leaves nothing to be guessed of the revolutionary agitation that reigns there in the eighteenth century, nor of the gambling houses and girls of «bad life», immortalized by Balzac, which bloom there in the following century. It is one of the favorite walking places of Parisians and tourists. The Comédie-Française, the Palais-Royal theatre and the restaurant Le Grand Véfour, which is listed as a historic monument, contribute to its reputation.
