Théâtre Gabrielle Dorziat

The Gabrielle-Dorziat Theatre, built in 1898, is decorated by great artists. It is named after the Spartan actress Gabrielle Dorziat and is listed as a historical monument. The theatre suffered a fire in 1915 and then the 1918 bombings. During the Second World War, it was a nucleus of resistance until the liberation of the city.
In 1898, the Epernay City Council decided to build a new 850-seat theatre on the current Place Mendès-France. On December 5, 1900, the foundation stone was laid under the orders of the architect Stanilas Loison, also designer of the theatres of Tours and Cherbourg.
Other artists participated in the decoration such as the sculptor Georges Trugard or Georges Clairin, official painter of the Belle-Epoque and decorator of the Opéra Garnier. Joseph Ascoli, Spartan sculptor, decorates the upper pediment of the facade with his work «La vigne champenoise inspirer l'Art théâtral». The theatre was inaugurated on 18 October 1902 with the performance of a comic opera.
