The Regional Conservation of Historical Monuments of the DRAC Grand Est makes you discover this jewel of the Châlonnais religious heritage, via a guided tour.
Look up and observe! 4 visits are offered to CM1/ CM2. The structure of the visit includes the following parts: - Rapid hierarchy of Catholic buildings and personalities; - Reasons for the construction of a religious building; - History of the Châlonnaise cathedral; - Playful questions; - Presentation of the baptismal tank; - Raising awareness on the protection of works; - Presentation of funeral slabs; - Drawing workshop of the old spire of the cathedral.

The Saint-Etienne Cathedral offers the visitor the testimony of an architectural evolution over 5 centuries, between the 12th and 17th centuries more precisely. Begun in Romanesque style, construction continued in Gothic and then Baroque style. In 700 years, expansions, modifications and reconstructions have marked its history.
In the 1200’s, the cathedral stood in the heart of the canonical district, which occupied a quarter of the ancient Gallo-Roman city. A real city in the city with a bishopric, churches, canonical houses, a library, a school, a prison, a hospital… today disappeared. From the first Romanesque construction of the twelfth century only the crypt and the base of the north tower of the transept remain. Following a fire in 1138, the north transept was rebuilt. In the years that followed, the nave was rebuilt in Gothic style and the south arm of the transept was completed in 1215.
