On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, enter a world of colors by discovering this atypical site. Raymond Isidore, owner of the place, takes the habit during his walks to collect pieces of glass and earthenware which he transforms into mosaics. From his humble home, he turned it into an enchanted palace where magic extends into the gardens. We can only admire the amount of work accomplished: 29,000 hours of work – 4 million pieces of crockery (15 tonnes). Only the size of its terrain seems to limit the creativity of the «Picassiette». Each detail embedded on the interior and exterior walls, as well as the furniture and floors, is the personal work of a modern builder . You will fall under the charm of a personal work reminiscent of that of the Factor Cheval or Antoni Gaudí.
A surprising and captivating visit for young and old!

Maison Picassiette
22 rue du Repos, 28000 Chartres

Masterpiece of the naive art, the House Picassiette is the work of Raymond Isidore, born in Chartres on September 8th, 1900\. Coming from an unprivileged background, he moves in in 1928, in a small house which he builds, in the district of Saint-Chéron. A few years after this installation, during a walk, he(it) collects china and glass pieces a mosaic of which he(it) makes to decorate the inside of his(its) house. Little by little, he(it) recovers the internal and external walls as well as the furniture, of mosaics of shards or of paintings(paints). His(Her,Its) activity confers on him(her,it) certain reputation which does not affect(allocate) its simplicity. He(It) becomes then the sponger, "Picassiette". In 1956, he extends his house and continues only to adorn the new so created surfaces, isolating himself more and more in his creation and towards others. He dies on September 6th, 1964\. He(It) used 15 tons of shards of dishes(crockery) and multicoloured glasses, for which he(it) is going to look in public dumps. His(Her,Its) creations began in 1930 and ended in its death. The house Picassiette, acquired by the City of Chartres in 1981, is classified as "Historic Monument" in 1983 and labelled Heritage from the XXth century to 2016.
