About the location

Cloître de la cathédrale Saint-Vincent de Chalon-sur-Saône
Place du Cloître, 71100 Chalon-sur-Saône
  • Saône-et-Loire
  • Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
The cloister of the canons of the Saint-Vincent cathedral is the only cloister adjoining a cathedral preserved in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its peripheral walls could be dated around the year one thousand, which makes it even more exceptional. Three wings with bays with trefoil arches date from the 14th century and were vaulted with warheads in the 15th century. The north wing is a contemporary reconstruction of a gallery that disappeared in the 19th century. In the spirit of the existing medieval and 19th century capitals, it is decorated with sculptures on capitals in Saint-Marc stone (Burgundy limestone) made by the sculptor Laetitia de Bazelaire evoking animals, the virtues, or the five senses.
