The old Prisons Tower is one of the few vestiges of medieval defensive architecture in Auxerre. It testifies to the power of high, medium and low justice exercised by the abbot of Saint-Germain over an entire district of the city. On the first floor of the tower, prisoners left graffiti, the oldest of which dates back to the 14th century. On the ground floor, a projection brings to life the atmosphere of the illuminated Retreat of 1889, a Auxerre night party that reached its peak.

Instituted under Revolution (law of 5 brumaire the year V) to receive papers acquired in the Republic (the national property(goods), deleted(eliminated) administrations) and to collect documents emanating from new administrations, departmental archives assure(insure) the preservation of documents produced by different administrations and establishments which followed one another on the territory of the department. They assume(accept) five missions so: collect the archive documents of administrations and utility having their seat(siege) in the department, as well as certain documents of private origin; keep(preserve) these documents in appropriated premises(places); list(classify) them and draught instruments of research(search) which allow to the public to have access there; announce archives to the public, respecting the lawful(legal) deadlines(extensions) of communicability, and orientate researches(searches); assure(insure) the cultural promotion(valuation) of bottoms by the organisation of exhibitions(exposures) or of actions(shares) in favour of the widest public.
