Free visit of Gustave Courbet’s workshop
Counter-pole of the Parisian workshop on rue Hautefeuille, famous for having been the setting for the manifest painting L'Atelier du peintre (1854-1855 - Musée d'Orsay, Paris) Gustave Courbet’s studio in Ornans was built by the artist in 1860. Located in «[s]on country», built on the outskirts of Ornans, this new space is imagined as a modern workshop that emancipates from traditional urban models, adapts to the practice and the trajectory of a painter torn between Paris and Ornans.
Forgotten for nearly a century, it was bought in 2007 by the department of Doubs, and listed as a Historic Monument on July 24, 2008. Integrated into the Courbet Pole, this place full of stories, inseparable from Courbet’s modernity, is experiencing its renaissance thanks to a restoration campaign launched by the Doubs department in 2021.
Come and discover this exceptional place, a little-known treasure: the only decoration painted by Gustave Courbet.
