The castle of Montferrand

In 1471, Claude de Montferrand obtained permission from the Duke of Savoy to build his castle in the northwest corner of the wall. Its exterior has evolved over the years. During this commented visit, we suggest you leave in 1468, to go to the "wedding of the century" which will unite the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold and Margaret of York, sister of the King of England, discovering the spectacular painted decor of the Montferrand castle. The painted decor was known but never studied and time greatly altered its condition. Surveys conducted in 2015 confirm the heritage importance of this civilian decor painted with tempera. It is estimated that about 40% of its surface has disappeared forever...
The municipality calls on Isabelle Rosaz, art restorer, who leads the restoration project from autumn 2016 to summer 2017. This meticulous work reveals several scenes: fights, lions, a tournament, characters, a unicorn, as well as a tent surmounted by an oriflame with the arms of the Montferrand family...
The author and exact date of the paintings are not known. However, elements such as the painter’s technique, the gothic writing and the costumes of the characters direct specialists to a work from the second half of the 16th century. But it turns out that the scenes perhaps relate a much older event.
