Located in the first district of Lyon, on the banks of the Saône, the Subsistances constitute a vast set of 22,000 m2, with varied architecture. It was in the seventeenth century that the Order of the Visitation built the convent of Chains. So baptized because upstream of the Saône, at night, the granting agents held chains across the river to prevent smugglers ships from entering Lyon. The Visitandines then built a claustral with ogival vaults, the only building with a religious vocation still existing today. Declared national property in 1789, the convent was put at the disposal of the army but it was not until 1841 that «La Manutention» was created, a vast warehouse gathering the various commodities and goods necessary for the operation of the regiments of the Lyon region.
