The castle of Tournon is a building listed(classified) in conformance with(for) historic monuments and is labelled museum of France. Constructed principally between the XIVth century and the XVIth century, its architecture manifests the evolution of the company(society), between medieval period and beginnings of Renaissance. Once having crossed(exceeded) heavy door of wood cloutée of the XVIth century, in the past preceded by a harrow, they penetrate into the main courtyard. The huge wall on right is the last evidence of the medieval donjon, called later castle Saint-Just, dating the Xth century. The left(awkward) wing was built by Guillaume de Tournon in the XIVth century. Next to her, the big(great) main building is the most recent part(party), where lived the Lords de Tournon. An inventory established in the middle of the XVIIth century shows the importance of the property(goods) which possessed this family. A library(bookcase), rich of some 800 volumes, hundreds of paintings(boards), of ancient medals, of marble statues and of busts, tapestries, precious furniture and many other objects still enriched the rooms of the castle. Emptied of its treasures, the castle was from the environment(middle) of the XVIIth century transformed into prison. Rooms must be done up, the castle was changed and adapted. In 1926, the prison sentence and the service(department) of historic monuments proceeds to a restoration(catering) of the building(ship) further to its classification(ranking) (1937-1938). . Of the castle to the museum. It is in this period when germinated the project of a museum installed(settled) in its breast. On May 6th, 1928, the Dress rehearsal des Rhodaniens union, based(established) by Gustave Toursier in 1927, inaugurates a Museum of the Rhône first installed(settled) provisionally in the chapel on the south terrace while waiting for works of restoration(catering) of the castle. Rich in a thousand objects, collections count artists' big(great) names. They allow to tackle(approach) very various domains: Fine Arts, decorative arts, local history(story), architecture, sciences and techniques, in particular the history(story) of Rhône and of inland water shipping.
