The Vercors is famous for having welcomed many resistance fighters during the Second World War, for having thus become one of the most important maquis of France and for having experienced a tragic outcome during the summer of 1944\. Devastated by fierce fighting, the Vercors became, after the war, a high place of national memory.
The departmental museum of the Vercors Resistance traces this history; it is at the heart of this famous massif, in Vassieux-en-Vercors, village Companion of the Liberation. Created in 1973 by a former guerrillas, Joseph La Picirella, the museum was taken over by the Department of Drôme in 1999\. It was completely renovated in 2010.
