The castle of Sain-Bel was founded around 1190 by the Benedictine abbey of Savigny on the hill of Montbloy, opposite the parish church of Sain-Bel and the village that surrounded it, on the other bank of the Trésoncle. Afterwards, the inhabitants left the hill of the church to gather at the foot of the castle in a fortified village. The castle controlled access to the abbey from the Brévenne valley and administered a territory comprising all or part of the parishes of Sain-Bel, Saint-Pierre-la-Palud, Sourcieux and Chevinay.
The castle of Montbloy in SAIN BEL built in the 12th century was originally one of the defence castles of the Benedictine abbey of SAVIGNY. In the 15th century it became the luxurious residence of the abbots. Charles VIII stayed there on the 2nd day of March 1489\. Over the centuries, it has undergone many changes.
