About the location

OBSERVATOIRE DE MARSEILLE
Palais Longchamp

The Observatory of Marseilles was founded in 1702 in the climb of the Accoules near the old port, with the subsidies of the Navy. It was directed by the Jesuits until the suppression of their order in the 1760s. A century later, on the occasion of the implantation in Marseilles of the large telescope of Foucault, the Observatory was transferred to the plateau of Longchamp where it is still. Today an active centre for research in astrophysics, it is one of the sites of the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, a component of the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille-Provence (OAMP).
